Die vs die set

The terms overlap, but there is a practical difference:

Die (flat die): A die is a moulding tool.  It is usually manufactured with a steel line in a plywood sheet (steel line die) or with a welded steel line on a sheet metal plate or welded frame (die cutter), often with multiple cavities, designed for flat pressing. The die presses the material through against a cushion, creating contours, holes and shapes with high precision and repeatability. Flat punches are suitable for higher requirements in terms of tolerance, surface finish and process capability (Cp/Cpk).

Punching tools (collective term): ”Punching tools” is a broader term that encompasses all types of tools used for punching: steel strip tools (the most common and cost-effective type), welded punching dies and rotary punching tools.

Rule of thumb: Do you need a cost-effective tool for series production in soft materials? Start with a steel line tools. Do you have high requirements in terms of tolerance, surface finish or process capability? Choose a die-cut mould or flat die-cut.

Materials and formats we process

Dimensions and tolerances

  • Detail size: from approximately 3 × 3 mm up to approximately 650 × 1600 mm, depending on the material, format and machine.
  • Thicknesses: plastic films, typically 0.05–0.5 mm thick, and soft plastics up to approximately 3 mm thick.
  • Tolerances: is determined by the requirements and materials. We ensure that cut quality, burr formation and repeatability meet your Cp/Cpk targets.

Please note that spans and tolerances are affected by material, geometry and volume. We always verify in a test run.
